FAQ

Most people have questions when it comes to automobiles and West Side Auto believes the more you know and the more informed you are the better decisions you will be able to make regarding Auto Care.

Why is getting your oil changed every 3000 miles important?
Having your oil changed every 3000 miles is an estimated time frame based on your frequent driving conditions. Dirty oil, breaks down over time. Heat and friction from broken down oil is a sure way to cause poor engine performance, lower gas mileage and reduce the longevity of the engine life. Having your oil changed on a regular schedule is a basic inexpensive way to protect your auto.

Will West Side Auto look at a used car I may be thinking of purchasing?
Short answer YES! Call us

What should I look for if I am thinking of purchasing a used car?
Here is a great link... A PRE-PURCHASE check list that can be printed out & take with you when looking at an AS IS auto

What does a New York State Inspection include?

Will you check for warranties or recalls if repairs are needed?
Yes! West Side Auto And Towing will kindly look into known or possible warranties and recalls

How often should I get a Tune-up?
Most auto manuals will recommend service or tune ups based on statistics however every auto is used differently either in seasonal driving, distance driving, extreme conditions on either spectrum as well as age of your auto usually will effect our recommendation for a Tune up schedule. Obviously the harder you push your auto and the older the auto is the more often you would want to have it Tuned or serviced. Preventative care as well as your yearly inspection is generally enough but again each car or truck is different and used in different situations. If you hear a noise you don't normally hear or smell, or see something you normally don't see, it is better to bring your auto in for a look over rather than having a break down.. Proactive Auto Maintenance is always a good plan of action.

Should I ask my repair station for a guarantee?
If you bring your car to a Registered Repair Service Station or not.. Always ask if there is a guarantee on parts used or service completed. Each situation is different and there is never a guarantee that something else will not go wrong.. but you as a customer can always ask.

What happens If my car does not pass N.Y.S. inspections?
Well Steve says.... "SELL IT" but in some cases it is something that can be remedied with a repair... West Side will always inform you! West Side will Always allow our customers to make the best decision for themselves, with good advise anything can change..

Do I have to take my auto to a dealer?
NO! It is well known that often you will be charged more by a car dealer than an independent owned Repair Shop. As long as you keep all repair work receipts and accurate details of your auto services provided it should not effect the warranties on your vehicle. It is always a good idea to keep those records should something go wrong you will be able to prove that it was not due to lack of preventative care or neglect

What should I have in my Emergency Car Kit?
You don't have to buy an expensive emergency auto kit for your trunk... You can find an old small suitcase or bag and buy items and store them little by little to create the ultimate repair kit on your own.. some items we suggest are:
  • Jumper Cables
  • Good High Powered Flashlights

How often should I check auto fluids?
Fluids should be checked every couple of hundred miles of driving. Of course again each Auto is Different and It can also depend on your driving conditions and habits, Auto age, and weather relations in your area. If you see a spot on the road that is new it is best to check more often to determine the rate of loss of fluids until you can get your auto to West Side Auto. By standards, most Auto Batteries will last strong for about 4 years... However It could be less or it could be more...  Belts should be checked when You are having your oil changed for signs, of stress or cracks and again, driving habits and weather conditions can effect overall

What should I ask when looking for a repair shop or need a tow company?
First and Foremost.... REPUTATION by word of mouth... Ask your friends, your family, your co-workers.. Check for State Repair Station regulation numbers.. Don't just trust the first Auto shop you come too, don't Just take your auto to the First number in the phone book... Do your research, talk to the repair shop owner/operator and get a feel for the place you plan on using.. Just because there are a lot of cars in the lot, does not mean its is a trust worthy shop

Can I ask for a particular Tow Co. if I get into an auto accident?
Each Situation is different. If the Accident is not blocking the Flow of traffic the general answer is yes... But if it is not advisable of feasible to remain at the scene without disruptions than you may have to use whomever is called to the scene first.

How do I know what my tire pressure should be?
Manufacturers will have the Pressure listed on the inside of the door as you open it. It is the number suggested for optimum gas mileage and tire ware. The pressure or PSI is also written on the tire its self with a minimum and maximum or do not exceed number. It is best to use the number on the inside of the door as long as your tires have remained the same size throughout the life of the auto.
